EU to Combat Fake Reviews in Tourism with New Code of Conduct

The European Commission has published a new “Code of Conduct” to enhance the reliability of online reviews in the tourism sector. The primary goal of these rules is to prevent fake reviews and ensure that only guests who have genuinely stayed at a property can post a review.

This new regulation will increase collaboration between digital booking platforms and hotels, helping consumers make more informed holiday decisions and strengthening transparency and fair competition in the tourism industry. Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas stated that these rules will “raise the bar” across Europe and create a fairer, more reliable, and transparent system for everyone.

This development aims to build consumer trust and help the sector move forward on a more solid footing.
