UN Tourism Reports 5% Increase in International Tourist Arrivals

International tourism showed strong growth in the first half of 2025, with global tourist arrivals increasing by 5% compared to the same period last year, according to a new report from the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism). This positive trend brings international tourist numbers to 85% of their pre-pandemic levels from 2019, showcasing the sector’s continued resilience despite various global challenges.

The report highlights significant regional variations in the recovery. The Middle East led the way with the strongest comeback, seeing a remarkable 20% increase in arrivals. Europe maintained a performance close to 2024 levels, while Africa and the Americas saw a strong recovery, reaching 95% of their 2019 figures. In contrast, Asia and the Pacific lagged behind with a recovery rate of 65%, indicating that the region’s travel sector is still in the process of rebuilding.

According to UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, the rebound is being fueled by the recovery of international air travel, rising demand from China and other Asian markets, and increased investments in digitalization and sustainability. While the organization predicts continued growth for the second half of 2025, it cautions that potential economic uncertainties, geopolitical tensions, and climate risks could introduce volatility into the market.
