Spain closed the 2025 summer season with a double victory in tourism, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The country welcomed 11.3 million international tourists in August, with total expenditure soaring to €16.39 billion, marking a robust 6.7% increase compared to the previous year.
Visitor Numbers Rise, Spending Deepens
- Record Visits: The number of tourists arriving in August 2025 grew by 2.9%. The total number of visitors for the first eight months of the year reached 66.8 million, the highest level since records began.
- Per Capita Spending: The average expenditure per tourist stood at €1,457, with a daily spend of €198. The fact that expenditure growth outpaced tourist volume growth signals the sector’s successful shift towards higher-value tourism.
Key Contributors: The British Lead the Spending
- Leading Market: The United Kingdom maintained its position as the top source market, accounting for 2.2 million visitors and contributing 19.2% of the total spending.
- Growth Markets: Spending by German tourists increased by 10% year-over-year. While the number of French tourists decreased by 5.1%, their expenditure still saw a slight rise of 1.4%. Tourists from Italy, the Scandinavian countries, and the Americas also contributed significantly to the spending increase.
Regional Highlights and Accommodation Preferences
- Top Regions: The Balearic Islands led in tourist expenditure, receiving 23.9% of the total revenue. This region saw a 3.5% increase in visitor numbers and a 9.8% jump in expenditure.
- Catalonia also saw a rise in expenditure (1.8%), despite a 4.3% decrease in tourist arrivals.
- Accommodation: A majority of tourists (63.9%) opted for hotels, a segment that saw expenditure increase by 5.7%. Individually organized travelers’ spending grew more sharply (8.2%) than those arriving on package tours (2.4% growth).
