The German Ministry of Health announced on Friday that all Spain, except the Canary Islands, is now included in the list of high-risk regions for covid-19.
The UK and Germany’s decision to remove Spain from the list of safe countries is a major dammage to the tourism sector of the country. Spain has popular tourist destinations such as Majorca and Ibiza.
Germany’s decision means that German tourists returning from mainland Spain or the Balearic Islands will be subject to mandatory COVID-19 testing and, if necessary, quarantine.
Recently, increasing covid-19 cases in Spain were drawing attention. More than 11 million German tourists visited Spain last year.
The German government defines regions with more than 50 new cases of covid-19 per 100,000 population as high-risk regions, however in Spain with a population of 47 million, this number is more than 56 recently.
