A tragic accident occurred in Lisbon, Portugal, on the evening of Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025, when the city’s tourist funicular, Glória, derailed. The incident resulted in 17 fatalities and numerous injuries. The funicular, a historic vehicle in service since 1885 and declared a national monument in 1997, is used by millions of tourists annually.
Following the accident, the Portuguese government declared a period of national mourning. Prime Minister António Costa described the event as a “national trauma,” and Mayor Carlos Moedas announced the temporary suspension of all funicular lines in the city. The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and questions about maintenance and safety protocols have been raised.
The presence of tourists from various countries among the injured has negatively impacted Lisbon’s global tourism image and prompted tour operators to re-evaluate the safety of city transportation. The Portuguese Tourism Office has convened emergency meetings to address crisis communication and review safety measures.
