EU agress on 'traffic light' system for travel within the union

The European Union has approved the ‘traffic light’ system which is designed to coordinate travel restrictions between member states.


Last month The European Commission has made a recommendation for using the traffic light system to ensure that travel restrictions on covid-19 imposed by Member States are coordinated at EU level.

The proposal was approved by the European Council at a meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday.

Under the new agreement, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) will publish weekly maps marking the regions with green, orange and red colors by evaluating the data of the previous two weeks.


ECDC will basically look at the local number of covid-19 cases and the ratio of positive tests in order to classify the regions.


The President of European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said: “We welcome this agreement to bring more order to a currently confusing situation.”
