200 European airports face the risk of insolvency

Airports Council International Europe estimated that approximately 193 airports in Europe would face insolvency risk in the coming months if passenger traffic does not start to recover by the end of the year.

According to the Council’s analysis, these airports provide employment for 277 thousand workers and an economic contribution of 12.4 billion Euros to the European economy.

Stating that government support is crucial at this point, the Council said otherwise, a significant part of Europe’s air transport system is likely to collapse.

ACI Europe’s analysis show, passenger traffic at airports in Europe decreased by 73% in September compared to the same month of the previous year, and there has been a loss of approximately 1.29 billion passengers since January 2020.

Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE, said “In the midst of a second wave, ensuring safe air travel continues to be our primary concern. It’s crucial that we reduce the risks of importation and dissemination as much as possible. But surely we can do a much better job of reducing those risks by testing air passengers rather than with quarantines that cannot be enforced.”
