As Typhoon Ragasa intensifies across Southeast Asia, Hong Kong’s aviation operations have come to a near standstill. Flag carrier Cathay Pacific announced the cancellation of more than 500 flights starting September 23 due to severe weather conditions.
36-Hour Airport Shutdown A spokesperson for Cathay Pacific confirmed that all passenger flights departing from or arriving at Hong Kong International Airport will be suspended from Tuesday 6:00 PM local time, with operations expected to resume on Thursday. The decision was made in anticipation of dangerously high winds and torrential rain.
Winds Expected to Exceed 200 km/h Authorities warned that wind speeds could surpass 200 kilometers per hour, prompting temporary closure of the airport to ensure passenger safety and minimize risk.
Flexible Policies from Other Airlines Other carriers including Qantas, Greater Bay Airlines, and Hong Kong Airlines have also adjusted their schedules. Greater Bay Airlines is offering free changes for flights between September 23–26 and full refunds for September 24 departures. Hong Kong Airlines announced similar flexibility for affected passengers.
