Tokyo Olympics announced on Saturday that spectators from overseas will not be allowed to the Olympic Games.
The decision was taken at a digital meeting held today, attended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee and the Government of Japan.
Games are planned to be held between 23 July and 8 August, the cost of tickets sold to the spectators from outside Japan will be refunded.
The Organizing Committee stated that due to the course of the covid-19 outbreak in Japan and all over the world, international travel to Japan cannot be guaranteed this summer, so this decision was made to allow those planning to come from overseas to change their plans at this stage.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) welcomed the decision taken by the Japanese authorities. Seiko HASHIMOTO, Chairman of the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, said:
”We are currently working on specific plans to share support remotely from around the world and help bring people together in ways suited to our current times. Even if you are no longer able to come to Japan this summer, we hope very much that you will continue to support the Tokyo 2020 Games.”
